Steam Deck

I’m excited for the new controller! Ergonomics look a bit funky maybe, and I don’t know how much I’d really use the trackpads, but having back paddles that count as separate buttons is a huge plus.

I’m looking forward to trying them. I probably won’t use the back buttons just like I don’t on my Steam Deck but I’m happy someone other than Sony is making a symmetrical controller so that there are more options on the market. I’m also happy they have the buttons for those who will use them. TMR sticks is also neat.

I’ll see what the Steam Machine costs when it comes out but I suspect I won’t get one, at least at launch. Steam controller for my PC sounds cool though

I’m in the same camp.

Having this for my living room is going to be extra convenient

What I love about the steam deck. Is that xbox is basically releasing there inferior version.

Man, it’s been a while since we’ve been talking on this thread. I found this video timely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5v10lisr_o

I’ve been messing around with Gamenative and Gamehub on my Ayn Thor, and they work surprisingly well for a lot of the games I want to play. I actually just ordered an Odin 3 12 gb that might get shipped next month. I ordered it for the reason that I can use it to play a lot of Steam games in a smaller, lighter form factor. I might just keep my Steam Deck docked and play it on my basement TV when I want to play PC games on the TV>

Betteridge’s Law of Headlines has your answer to the question posed by that video

I’m not sure how Android is really an answer to the shortage of things like Steam Decks, because supply constraints will also hit Android devices.

And as a personal preference, I’d hope to stick with Linux over Android if I can, if only because I prefer the UX.

But it is nice that people are innovating on this front because more options are always good.

I mean, I did watch the video. The answer is actually kind of yes, which lines up with my experiences. His experiment is just to play the top 10 games on steam over the last week and see if they just work out of the box. He skipped baldurs gate because that’s just kind of silly, but the only one that didn’t work was the original slay the spire.

It’s not so much the android experience I’m looking for, it’s the lower powered integrated chips that I want more innovation with. Those things are the future IMO. I don’t think we’re going to see a steam deck 2 for quite a while because none of the chip makers will build them a custom APU right now, but all these smaller Chinese companies are pushing out these new handhelds with these off the shelf chipsets that are getting better every few months.

I was just teasing you about the headline. I agree integrated chips are the future. I mean look what Apple’s done with their SoC that run cooler, faster and with less power.

But the thing I’m looking forward to is advances in Linux on ARM, and specifically Valve’s own ARM build of SteamOS. I think anything tied to Android is not the way I want to go, because then we are too closely tied to Google and an OS that’s increasingly moving toward being closed.

I’d love to play with a small device running SteamOS on ARM.

I’ve been re-playing Power Wash Simulator 2 on my Steam Deck; that’s nice. I think it makes my eyes a little tired after a while. The Adventure Time missions just came out

Also started one called Remember Me, will have to see how that goes. Well, more like halfway through it I think

I get it. The OS doesn’t matter too much to me really. These devices all have ARM based chips, so all the software being built for them should be portable for the inevitable Steam Deck ARM edition.

I did not know they had Adventure Time missions in Power Wash Simulator. My son would probably get real excited if I got that for him.

I wonder if Adventure Time could convince me to try this game.

You get to see BMO and pet [it?]

I’m not up to date on Adventure Time lore myself, but I’ve liked all the [Power Wash] crossovers so far. Just finished this one this morning

This is the thing I’ve been waiting to happen. The ROCKNIX Linux distro for these ARM chips can install Steam now. ROCKNIX Now Turns Your Android Handheld Into a Mini Steam Deck | Retro Handhelds

Nice. Are you going to try it? I’d love to know how well it works.

I’ll probably let Retro Game Corps do a video on it first before I try and screw up my Thor.

Speaking of the Thor, it’s getting a $100 price hike due to component shortages:

Interesting. It’s only the Max model that’s increasing in price. I think I heard Russ from Retro Game Corps say that they don’t sell very many of those. There’s really no reason to go above the 12GB for the most part. The Base model and up all have the same chip in them. They all can take micro SD cards, so you don’t even need the storage. Seems weird to even keep the model.
