Grand Theft Auto studio accused of ‘union busting’ after sacking workers

Unlike America, firing people for wanting to join a union is illegal in the UK. If it can be proven that that is why they were fired Rockstar will be up for a huge fine.

It is also illegal in the US to fire employees for wanting to join a union. The current govt shutdown and some actions previously taken by the Trump administration have left the National Labor Relations Board lacking the teeth it is supposed to have to enforce the law but it is still illegal.

What Vakil said, Anti-union activity is also illegal in the US. Despite what some might think, unions in the US made huge historical strides for labourers and also influenced unions around the world. It’s thanks to US Unions and members that literally put their lives on the line that some international unions have benefited. I belong to an exceptionally strong Union in Canada and that union is the Canadian extension of one of the largest labour unions in the US. I have Americans who worked hard for labour rights in the past to thank for a robust union that continues to fight for my rights today, even if Canada is friendlier to Unions in general than the US in the contemporary moment.

Can we stop spreading misinformation please?

I mean it is illegal in Germany too, but of course corporations try to undermine it at every step, they just try to hide it and I am sure the same happens in the UK and basically everwhere.

A big example would be big grocery stores. When REWE for example faced unionizing efforts, they came up with a loophole. If a business has less than or just 5 employees (and more than 2 of them beeing there less than 6 months) the rules for setting up a works council do not apply anymore, so they made every single market a private business under the REWE (and other big grocery stores like EDEKA did the same etc.) umbrella. Now my REWE is officially “Mehmet’s REWE” has 5 employees (and employees change often) and a few randoms hired for an hour here and there and voila no more works council and no more unions.

I know US is bad but damn is it getting worse and worse everywhere by the day. It is a shame because workers everywhere fought so hard for these rights, people died for this to become law.

You could have explained the situation as other did, or asked why I believed what I said, but no. Just straight in there with the accusations of pushing false information. Well done.

This really comes across as overly condescending, mean and defensive when Roach was rather polite in their reply to your very reductive comment, as you mentioned others have already pointed out. You could have just not responded, but instead you lashed out at Roach for no real reason and you look like a dick. Burning good will for no reason is a strange way to celebrate the release of your book, no?

As you say—well done!

Repeatedly you’ve made incorrect statements about my country and preach it as fact. I have debunked your comments before. You’re upset I’m not continuing to cleanup the misinformation when you should be doing the bare minimum and just researching a topic before you make claims about it. That’s not my job to do for you, nor is it to be unendingly patient.
