There are just so many other directions it could have gone. Imagine an animated film in the style of Alan Lee, or a continuation of the Ralph Bakski look or, better yet, one in Tolkien’s own whimsical illustrative style.
Imagine a whole film based on this amazing piece of work from Croatia (not sure who the artist is).
Last Flag Flying takes Richard Linklater’s naturalistic style and grafts it onto a Vietnam/Iraq War narrative. Featuring three great performances from Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, and Steve Carrell- Linklater directs a film inquisitive about war, masculinity, and faith with interesting conclusions about all its themes. The cinematography isn’t much to write about, but it supports Linklater’s no frills execution. Perhaps the grimmest of Linklater’s oeuvre, his signature wit still sings in this dialogue. It’s on Amazon Prime here in the states. You should check it out if you can.
I just watched what I think is now my favourite movie from 2023, Perpetrator (Dir. Jennifer Reeder). A wonderfully surreal horror film that I feel like I cannot do justice in words. I’m now really looking forward to watching her previous film Knives and Skin.
So I guess since I’m playing Quantum Break I’m now also watching Quantum Break. It’s serviceable within the context of the game, and definitly part of an interesting project to bridge interactive media with the televisual. It has a strong late 2000s broadcast TV feel, something akin to 24. The result is a show that looks and feel very dated, much more so than the game, which still feels very contemporary and looks gorgeous.
Watched Doom and Doom: Annihilation First one was god awful. second one i actually liked.
Also watched Sorceror a crazy ass movie that came out the same time as star wars and was thus, overlooked. a fantastic movie. Several aspects of the film made me think of some aspects of Jagged Alliance 2 though it is probably a coincidence.
I have only seen the first one and I had fun watching, not that it is a good movie. It did keep my interest to the end and it surprised me to see Karl Urban in it. I am not a fan of the games so I had no expectations going in.
I have to admit that the video game adaptions I have seen so far (only a few) were not as bad as people made them out to be. I probably got lucky.
Ok, thinking a bit longer about it Alone in the Dark (2005) was one I did not enjoy not even as “so bad it is fun” - it had a few small ideas that could have been something and then took a sledge hammer and destroyed them painfully including Christian Slater.
The Fablemans is, in my opinion, more late-stage, by-the-numbers, forgettable Spielberg fare, but the John Ford scene is so fun. I legit don’t think you need to have any reverence for Ford or David Lynch to feel the moment- it’s just powerful and fun on its own merits. It is perhaps the simplest and most straight forward discussion on media literacy in a big studio feature. And it’s funny! Ford saying that the horizon in the middle is “boring as shit” is more memorable than any long-winded sermon. I love that one scene. The rest of the film is fine.
Funny Games (1997) - Shit! Well, it wasn’t terrible but it was my first time seeing a Haneke movie and I was excited and it just didn’t fully hit. Bonus points for John Zorn though.
964 Pinocchio (1991) - I had no idea what was going on by the end, and I probably wasn’t expected to. Just enjoyed the ride. I like how so much was shot in public in Tokyo and there’s just people staring at the cameras and just observing all the craziness lol. Visually it’s great and some of the body horror and effects and shots are pretty impressive.
La Grande Bouffe (1973) - I really liked it. Very funny, and very decadent!
Shadows in Paradise (1986) - Not terrible, but I didn’t love it. Reminded me a bit of Fassbinder but not as compelling maybe.
Goodfellas (1990) - Really enjoyed it. I tend not to like voice over narration in movies. I understand why it’s employed a lot of the time but generally it tends to annoy me, just a personal thing. But Scorsese just makes it work for the most part, like in this and in Casino.
Just took my new friend to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice !
The first one is one of her favorites; I had never seen it. We were hoping to watch together before the sequel, but unfortunately life got in the way of this. I had to watch 1 on my own on Friday to get caught up
Now I’d like to watch the cartoon, which I vaguely remember from back in my day, but I didn’t really follow it specifically. Interesting how Lydia and Beetlejuice were best friends in the cartoon, but it looks like that is certainly not the case in the movies !
And my friend gave me a k-ss on the ch–k [my first]
Watched The Black Phone ast night. While I enjoyed it I don’t think it’s anything incredibly spectacular. I also don’t understand why Ethan Hawk is as regarded as he is. He’s always been rather forgettable for me.
