What kind of show are you looking for?
Last year I started keeping a spreadsheet of all the films I watch, rating them (out of 5, like Grouvee) and ranking them all. My goal was to watch 100 movies… which I managed! This year I’ve watched 3 so far, lol. (The Back to the Future trilogy, randomly felt like rewatching them.) Just been too busy for TV lately, unfortunately.
For some 1-star films I saw last year… (I’ll pick ones people have heard of)
- Up – Yeah, the Up from Pixar. I can accept accusations of having no heart, but setting aside the extremely overhyped first three minutes the rest of the film was a tedious slog.
- Super Mario Bros – We all know it had basically nothing to do with the games. But even if it didn’t have the Mario name attached to it though, it’s still just a bad film.
- From Up On Poppy Hill – I’m slowly working through all the Ghibli flicks… This one is boring, boring, boring, boring, boring. I imagine Miyazaki said anime was a mistake after watching this. (*I know he didn’t actually say that.)
- The Space Between Us – I’m always hoping for good genre films that blend in sci-fi elements in new ways, but this romance with a boy from Mars ain’t it chief.
- Lost in Translation – Two hours that feels like twenty hours! Maybe the most boring movie I’ve ever seen. Plus a lot of stuff that hasn’t aged well, to put it nicely. I’m fine with slower-paced artsy films, but there’s gotta be a hook, or an interesting message or something.
Interestingly I remember actually being okay with that one. Nothing amazing (standard summer popcorn-muncher fare), but nowhere near as bad as everyone made it out to be. I’m not someone who ever had a deep love for the original though.
Haven’t seen any of the others you listed. I’m always wondering if I should ever attempt any of the DC film stuff. I remember there was a time when it was every comic nerd’s dream to have a Batman vs Superman movie, lol. I’ve never been that into superhero stuff tbh, but I still can’t help but hope that one day they’ll actually make a really good Superman film, one that captures the optimism and fun of the Fleischer shorts. I’ve never agreed with the notion that he’s too difficult a character to write a compelling narrative for.
Lost in Translation – Two hours that feels like twenty hours! Maybe the most boring movie I’ve ever seen.
You’ve not seen Girl with the Pearl Earring, then. ![]()
Ghostbusters 2016 - if you’ve no attachment to the original films I can see how this wouldn’t bother you. However, if you’re a huge fan - it’s my favourite movie - then there is a lot wrong with it. And no, it has nothing to do with the women. If men or chipmunks or frogs were cast in that film it would still be terrible. I won’t go into details because it would be a very long post, but basically the makers of that film completely missed what made the original a classic in the first place.
If you’re not into superheroes I’d not bother with the DC films, apart from maybe Wonder Woman as that is actually a brilliant film, at least until the end fight. The rest are all pretty meh to terrible.
While I don’t think there is anything good about Batman Vs Superman outside the casting of Bats, Sups and Wondy, the biggest question is this; how the hell do you make a move about two of the biggest heroes in comics fighting each other so bloody dull!?!
I use Letterboxd.com for movies these days, just like Grouvee for games
I guess I sorta got into making lists. I don’t really rate them, though
I used to use that site but found it so full of pretentious film snobs I left.

Pretentious film snobs who also happen to love things like MCU movies. I mean if people are going to be snobs, at least have some pride in your snobbery ![]()
Is that a secret way of telling us you’re on there?
Maybe I’ll rejoin. I’ve been using IMDB, but the interface is pretty horrible.
Lol, I’m technically there but I don’t use it. I’m not a huge fan of the community. Too many people ready to pounce on users for not sharing the same views on movies that are deemed unimpeachable by some. Ultimately, it’s a far less communal and friendly place than a place like Grouvee.
This is the kind of thing I mean.
Was it the best movie? No. Was it stull a lot of fun? Yes! What the hell do people want? It just gets so tiering.
Are there any other options besides this and IMDB?
I don’t know if I really see an issue with this. I think the ironic part is that even though they are likely making a joke, they probably still don’t get Scorsese’s argument. But that aside, I just wouldn’t let reviews like this bother you. I’m sure there are plenty of reviews from people who thought the film was enjoyable.
I just keep a list and ignore pretty much everything else [on Letterboxd]
I noticed there were some reviews for the movies, though
No sure if it counts but we’ve been watching Attack on titan for a good while (I read the manga in a rush after the s04p1, and last episode was DAMN!
TMDB is the biggest IMDB alternative as far as I know but I use neither of them as I don’t think they are that good to keep track of movies/shows. Personally, I prefer AniList for anime and Trakt for anything else.
oh man one viewing of that the other year was enough for me. That’s a weird one.
@Girafro @YABUKI lots of great reccomendations going on my letterbox (photonviewer) add me if you guys want.
how about the five WORST movies you’ve ever seen? The ones that in your opinion have no redeeming qualities whatsoever (so, not “so-bad-it’s-good”, just plain bad).
oh god you really had to do it didnt you?
Well You are in luck because there are EXACTLY FIVE movies i’ve given half a star on letterboxd:
Black Demons (1991) directed by Umberto Lenzi • Reviews, film + cast • Letterboxd
This is an Italian Horror film where everything about this is just so bad. It’s so cheap. Zombies don’t even look like zombies. It’s distasteful, its racist and boring. It’s hands down the worst Italian Horror film I’ve seen.
Blood Machines (2019) directed by Raphaël Hernandez, Savitri Joly-Gonfard • Reviews, film + cast • Letterboxd
A tragic outcome for a kickstarter backed movie which essentially is a long music video montage for Carpenter Brut visually stylized somewhat similiar to Mandy… “Oh God, that sounds so awesome!” I can hear you say. Yes, and the ability to disappoint is quite great. This terrible sack of shit made literally NO sense and if you read how they stretched the goals to ‘make more movie’ it’s no suprise. Ugh, when will people learn…
Death Powder (1986) directed by Shigeru Izumiya • Reviews, film + cast • Letterboxd
This was actually reccomended to me by one weird cookie who is a fan of Japanese Cyberpunk subgenre. I am tempted to watch it again because a second viewing might make it make a bit more sense. It’s a very rough film that’s on an obvious shoestring budget and I just couldnt get into it Probably my least enjoyed japanese film I’ve seen.
Cremaster 1 (1996) directed by Matthew Barney • Reviews, film + cast • Letterboxd
I’f you’ve made it this far into my Forlorn Five, your gonna die if you start this series for sure. Literally some weird arthouse nonsense about the male reproductive system expressed in occult metaphors, However this actually is like the second to last film in the series or something as they are deliberated numbered incorrectly (The first was at least interesting. Here its just a buncha blimps in a stadium, you won’t get weird motorcycle rides and people crawling through tunnels of goop.) In any case, to think that this stuff was sold privately and not intended for public distribution is just wacky. This director thinks he’s some kinda enlightened hot shit, but he’s basically just a con man. After watching all of them in one sitting, I want my saturday back dammit!
Cremaster 2 (1999) directed by Matthew Barney • Reviews, film + cast • Letterboxd
OK I Actually liked the rest of the series a bit more, but they are still bad and never shoulda been made. This one I remember being particularly boring and the most noneventful of them all. If you like, are seriously gonna put yourself through this audio-visual trepanation, start with Cremaster 4 and enjoy that tap dancing troll depicted on the poster!
@Reset_Tears ah come on super mario bros is good. You should check out the cyberpunk Jankel Cut/Edit It was an adult movie that they dumbed down for kids. Not too far or From Max Headroom
In any case here’s some of the stuff I watched lately that I liked. (Been watching mostly Anime an Japanese horror lately)
Loved everything about this. Over the Top police nonsense that vibes like Final Fight or another Beaet 'Em Up
This was Good. In some ways it reminded me of Akira. Without spoiling it any, it’s about people on the moon and earth who both think each other were destroyed in an ecological accident.
Love Ari Aster it seems. While this isn’t terribly scary its really unnevering and disturbing and makes yo uthink. Thought it was pretty much perfect.
A classic movie that is low-key mind blowing in what it sets out to present. There’s so much history and shit packed in this it’s hard to believe its’s a single movie. Then again it’s freaking long enough to be multiple movies. Pretty much perfect.
Really good and funny. I think one’s enjoyment of this goes higher if they’ve seen UHF, the movie isn’t really like that but that movie is a great trainer for the sort of humor Al tends to have in movies.
It’s good fun just like Knives out was.
Really liked this the two main characters are such twisted psychopaths and all their deviousness is quite entertaining to hear their every though and scheme.
Intense movie about a badass viking. Quite different from Robert Eggers previous movies.
Old Japanese movie from the 60’s. I got into this because it has a weird evil vibe to it as a martial arts master’s pride gets the better of him and he refuses to show an act of weakness.
One of the best documentaries I’ve seen in a long time. Carl Saganish trip that goes in several different places. It was genuinely interesting and fascinating overview of quite a bit.
One of the better Cronenberg movies imo. It’s got style and substance, i’m not sure how some find this one boring.
The Oscars don’t matter as far as who wins. It’s like just their opinion man. But I’m happy basically everybody I wanted to win won. EEAAO, Brendan Fraser, and Pinocchio all get a kiss from me.
I also loved Banshees of Inisherin but I’m still happy for EEAAO
I recently learnt that Jeffery Coombs is in a film that was going to be a Doctor Strange adaptation but the production company lost the rights before filming began, so they called it Doctor Mordrid.
Coombs as Strange sounds like perfect casting to me! I SO need to see this film!
I don’t know if you’re a fan of any other Full Moon features, but Doctor Mordrid is one of them, and it’s quintessential Full Moon schlock (I don’t use that pejoratively):
Anybody watching the new season of the Mandalorian? I loved the most recent episode!
Summary
That empire lady (idk her name lol) is so evil. It was such a shockingly cruel thing to do to someone. But the episode does a really good job IMO of comparing Mando’s cult converting Bo Katan and Empire Lady manipulating Doctor Glasses (I promise you that I like this episode, I just don’t know these characters’ names). Great stuff. I know people complain about how slow this show can go, but I like these more contained asides.
I still have to start season one. Well I did start it, and the moment Din Djarin got into a Republic era ST-70 assault ship I said to myself “it’s going to be one of those kinds of shows,” and I immediately stopped and went back to rewatch the prequel films, caught up on The Clone Wars TV show and watched Obi-Wan. I’m currently watching Tales of the Jedi and will resume The Mandalorian once I’m done (I’ve decided I only need to watch Rebels before Ahsoka’s show drops so I’m skipping it for now).
I’m glad I did do all of that because it’s clear we are going deep into the after effects of the Clone Wars on Mandalore, and everything that happened between the Jedi, Death Watch and the political schism on the planet.
One thing I’m concerned about is that I’ve heard rumours of where the show is headed, and it sounds like it’s being used to justify events in The Rise of Skywalker, which is deeply unfortunate if true.
I actually thought this episode was particularly super slow but Andor also made me feel more at ease with that kind of pacing. And I thought the same thing BMO mentioned while I was watching it, that some of the plot will be used to give more context to the rapid rise of the empire seen in the sequels. And yeah, the empire lady is diabolical and they made it seem so sketchy from the beginning, screaming that something was going to happen to naïve-man.
In any case, I think that one of the most interesting part that this series has given has been the existence of force adepts outside the jedi cult, even cooler a force-wielding yoda-like mandalorian that won’t be killed by Ben Solo.
