I think it’s because it’s like tennis with less expensive racquets (i.e. paddles), and lower stakes that make for a more casual sport that many feel a bit more accessible to many. The court is also different which changes up the feel of play, from what I hear. It’s like giant outdoor table tennis which people seem to dig.

That makes sense. I do love table tennis, or the idea of it cause I’m horrible at it. Badminton is my favorite racket sport.

On the eve of my 30th year I worried that my health might start to slip as I got older and I enrolled at a personal training studio where I did 40 minutes of strength training supervised by a trainer twice a week. They also had access to my fitness tracker data and asked me to do cardio on my own 2-3 times a week. I typically arrived early to do 30 minutes of light cardio to warm up before each strength training session and did my elliptical at home another 2-3 days a week.

It was honestly such a good thing for me. I recently saw a Facebook memory where I was talking about what a huge positive impact training had made on my mental health and felt a bit of sorrow, because I only kept up the training for about 2.5 years. Towards the end of that time I bought a house, and money got a lot tighter, and I ended up cutting the training because it wasn’t cheap (worked out to around $90/session if I recall) and at the time I felt like I knew enough about how to exercise that I could train on my own.

It turned out that the real value of what I was paying for wasn’t the instruction, but the accountability to a pseudo authority figure that discouraged me from skipping sessions, and without that I worked out less and less over time, and now at age 40 I basically don’t get any routine exercise beyond walking my dog a few times a day. I’m not in bad health, but I’m not in particularly good shape either, especially compared to my prime years. And it’s shallow for this to be my main concern, but I’m really not that happy with the combo effect of age and a sedentary lifestyle on my appearance.

It just feels like it would take so long to re-establish a habit and actually start to see results, and I’ve always struggled with consistency and sticking with fitness every time I’ve attempted it, outside of those 2.5 years where I saw a trainer. The house has continued to be a money pit and I still don’t think I could free up ~$720/month (or likely more, assuming inflation has raised rates) to enroll in training again. Wish I knew a cheaper method of reliably motivating myself.

I need to start working out more often. Just hard becuase after driving 40 minutes just want to go home and watch tv shows. As a therapist i just want to rest after talking to people all day.
